08.12.2022 – JMCM and Cérium Conference: Éric Ponthieu

The Jean Monnet Centre in collaboration with Cérium welcomes Éric Ponthieu for a conference entitled: “Le Pacte Vert européen: un modèle pour la gouvernance nationale et régionale du climat ?” The talk will describe the content of the European Green Pact, which is a framework of European Union (EU) policy initiatives aimed at making the EU climate neutral by 2050. The European Green Pact is a comprehensive, integrated and cross-cutting policy that mobilizes a wide range of sectoral policies, actors and instruments to achieve its climate neutrality goal. In doing so, the Green Pact applies the key principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conference will address the specificities of the European model and will open a reflection on its possible replicability at the international level.

Eric Ponthieu, a Belgian national, has been a European civil servant since 1994, having held various positions in the European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), a consultative body of the European Union that represents the views of civil society. In his current position as Head of Unit at the EESC, he is in charge of policies dealing with sustainable development, the environment, agriculture and food, biodiversity, climate change and the circular economy. Eric Ponthieu holds a doctorate in science from the University of Science and Technology of Lille. Before becoming a European civil servant, he was a journalist (he wrote some papers for La Presse), researcher and teacher. He has continued his teaching activity until today, depending on various requests from European and Japanese universities.
