On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, join Elsa Bernard (Université de Lille) for a new event as part of our winter 2024 Speaker series, titled: “La communautarisation de la défense européenne ? “. The conference will take place from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at the University of Montreal, 3200 Jean-Brillant Street, Room B-3250.

This event is organized in partnership with the Maison de l’Europe in Montreal.

The conference will be in French. No registration is required.

“The European Union was built for peace. However, the deterioration of its security environment over the past ten years, and more notably the invasion of Ukraine by Russia at the beginning of 2022, has unprecedentedly accelerated a ‘Defense Union’ that goes beyond the sole domain of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), integrated into the Treaty on European Union in 1992. Beyond this intergovernmental pillar, it is indeed in areas falling under the so-called ‘community’ method (internal market, industry, research…) that the elements of a European defense are gradually developing, always caught between the national defenses of the 27 Member States and NATO.”
