13.04.2023 : JMCM Partnership Conference – Anna Triandafyllidou / Ndeye Dieynaba Ndiaye / Catherine Xhardez / Luca Sollai
Round table organized by CERIUM, ERIQA and JMCM:
Europe is facing increasing pressure with regard to migration issues. The volume of arrivals and asylum applications has increased sharply since last year, notably due to the war in Ukraine and migration flows across the Mediterranean. This situation has highlighted once again the difficulties and limitations of Europe’s migration policy, especially in the management of crisis situations, which remains largely the prerogative of States. The participants of the roundtable will explain the modalities of intervention of the EU for the resolution of crises, as well as their application in the different national contexts.
Participants:
- Anna Triandafyllidou, Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration – Europe facing migration issues: Pragmatic approach or lack of leadership?
- Ndeye Dieynaba Ndiaye, UQAM, Department of Legal Sciences – The European Right of Asylum between Protection and Fight against Irregular Migration
- Catherine Xhardez, UdeM, Department of Political Science – Temporary protection following the invasion of Ukraine, European and Canadian perspectives
- Luca Sollai, UdeM, CÉRIUM Research Fellow Europe – Italy’s migration policy in the European context
Moderator and conclusion: Luna Vives, UdeM, Department of Geography
The round table will be followed by a “coffee-snack” break, before the Simone Veil lecture by Claire Faggianelli, a lifeguard on the Viking Ocean. A cocktail will be served from 5:30 pm.
