The Jean Monnet Centre community was saddened to learn of the death of Armand de Mestral, aged 81, on June 16, 2023.

An expert in comparative and European law and Professor Emeritus at McGill University, Armand de Mestral was one of the pillars of Montreal’s EU research community.

His interest in the European Communities and then the European Union was long-standing and constant throughout his fruitful career. Consequently, when the Institute for European Studies of the Université de Montréal and McGill University was created in 2000, he was chosen to co-direct it.

As Co-Director and Chaire Jean-Monnet, he organized numerous activities and acted as the representative of this brand-new institution. His contributions and his reputation in the field have contributed enormously to the longevity and success of today’s Centre Jean-Monnet de Montréal.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students.
